I hold certification from Yoga Therapy Ireland, specializing in Yoga for Parkinson's and Movement Disorders, and I am also a certified Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery Instructor. PWR!Moves form the foundation of PD-specific functional exercise and physical therapy programs, targeting skills prone to decline in individuals with Parkinson's disease, often resulting in reduced mobility and function.

Additionally, my chair yoga and exercise sessions present a wonderful opportunity to socialize and forge new connections.

My Story with Yoga Therapy

A hobby

Over the last 20 years, I have also been a regular Yoga practitioner and although it is really just something I love to do for myself, it has brought me a number of benefits, including, but not limited to, muscle stretching & strength, improved posture, joint mobility & health and a way to better cope with stress, allowing me to be more present, relaxed and to focus on what truly matters in my life. So after a couple of years of tossing and turning, wondering if I was perhaps getting too old to become a yoga teacher, I took the plunge. In early 2019, I decided to qualify with Yoga Therapy Ireland and completed a 2 year YTI (500-hour) yoga teacher training.

A disease

Rewind back to just over a decade ago, I involuntarily developed an interest for Parkinson's Disease (PD) following my husband of 30 years' diagnosis. Since there were already hundreds of yoga teachers in Ireland, I took on a further 4 months of training to specialise and certify with 2 USA based Yoga teachers and experts in PD & Movement Disorders, Theresa Conroy and Renée Le Verrier. During my training with Renée, I met some amasing people and subsequently I was introduced to the PWR! Moves program. After reading in length about it and watching various video demos and interviews with the founder Becky Farley (a physical therapist, neuro-scientist, and Parkinson exercise specialist), it became apparent to me that not only yoga therapy, but also structured aerobic exercise classes could have tremendous physical, mental and social benefits not only for People with Parkinson's but also for seniors who want to stay fit and healthy. The exercise classes encourage functional mobility, postural stability, help reduce motor symptoms of PD and improve the overall quality of life of people living with Parkinson's and people getting old. So in February of 2022, I took the PWR! Moves online course Instructor's Certification and I am now integrating the PWR! Moves within my yoga therapy classes for seniors and people with impaired movements due to old age, recent surgery or injury recovery, etc.

Regular Flex & Stretch Chair Yoga & Exercise for Seniors Can…

  • Improve balance, strength, flexibility, and mobility, which can reduce the risk of falls and injuries

Chair yoga is an excellent option for staying in shape and well as you get older. You can adapt the yoga poses to a sitting position, so you can experience the advantages of this ancient technique without overexerting yourself.

By enhancing your breathing capacity through breath work, your muscular strength through poses and exercise, your balance and gait, your mobility and flexibility, you can boost your daily performance, delay aging effects, ease some of its discomforts, and restore some of your life quality.

  • Ease joint pain and stiffness, especially for people with arthritis or osteoarthritis

Yoga is an ancient practice that uses the body’s own weight and power to create harmony between mind and body.

Chair yoga is a form of yoga that adapts the poses to a seated position, making it suitable and safe for older adults. It can enhance your balance, strength, flexibility, and mobility, which can reduce the risk of falls and injuries. It can also ease your joint pain and stiffness, especially if you suffer from arthritis or osteoarthritis.

  • Lower stress, anxiety, and blood pressure, which can benefit the heart and mental health

One of the benefits of chair yoga is that it can calm your mind and reduce your stress, anxiety, and blood pressure. Stress, anxiety, and high blood pressure are common problems that affect many people, especially as they age.

Chair yoga can help you cope with these problems by teaching you how to breathe deeply, relax your muscles, and focus your attention on the present moment. These skills can help you lower your stress, anxiety, and blood pressure levels, which can improve your heart and mental health.

  • Highlights the benefits of relaxation and meditation for older adults

While meditation has many well-known benefits, what many people might not know is that it can help boost the immune system, reduce blood pressure, control pain, and benefits other health conditions that apply to lots of older adults.

Meditation can help reverse the rate of aging, especially when it comes to maintaining your gray matter, which is the part of your brain that helps control movement, emotion and memory. From reducing stress, anxiety, and depression to improving our attention spans, meditation can benefit you as you get older.

  • Help you reconnect with your mind and body

Another benefit of chair yoga is that it can foster a deeper connection between your mind and body, and boost your mood and happiness. Many people tend to lose touch with their mind and body as they get older, due to factors such as physical limitations, chronic pain, social isolation, or cognitive decline. This can lead to feelings of sadness, loneliness, or hopelessness.

Chair yoga can help you reconnect with your mind and body by encouraging you to pay attention to your sensations, emotions, and thoughts. By doing so, you can become more aware of your needs, preferences, and strengths, and develop a more positive and compassionate attitude towards yourself and others. This can help you enhance your mood and happiness, and enjoy a better quality of life.
